When you share your status, your approved contacts will receive an SMS text with your status and a link to see your GPS location. You can personalize your status based on what you’re doing. Some examples are: “Going for a run! Can you watch over me?,” “Heading home from the bar,” or “Taking a hike in the woods, will check-in when I’m back!”. Your friends can request an update and you can reply via the app (but they don’t need the app to see your status or location). When you no longer need to share your location (i.e. when you have completed your activity), simply open the app, click the x in the top left corner, and press the “Stop Sharing. I’m Safe!” button to let them know you made it back safely.

The ROAR Personal Safety app works in two ways:

1) With your Athena device. Pair your Athena to our mobile app via Bluetooth, designate your emergency contacts within the app, and, you’re ready to use Athena. When activated, Athena will communicate with our app on your smartphone to send distress messages with your location to your contacts.

2) As a stand alone application. Before you begin an activity, set a status in your ROAR app to let your contacts know what you’re doing and where you are. When you have an active status, your contacts can ask you to check in with them. And, when you’re in an emergency situation but find yourself without your Athena – or, if you don’t own one yet –, send out distress messages via the app.

The ROAR app also features Stories for Good™ that you can browse to stay updated on the latest news related to gender equality and find resources if you or a loved one has been the victim of violence, assault, or harassment.

Download: ROAR Personal Safety App

The ROAR Personal Safety application helps you get more out of your Athena. It’s where you learn how to use and pair your device, manage your contacts, and connect with others when you feel unsafe. The app also offers the latest news related to gender equality and provides resources related to violence, assault and harassment.

  1. Search ‘ROAR Personal Safety’ and download the app
  2. Follow the instructions in the app to set up your Athena device

Please note that Athena may need to be charged before pairing.

Tell your loved ones
Talk to your contacts about adding them as an emergency contact and give them a heads-up on what you want them to do if they receive a distress message from you.

Practice: Using Athena

Alarm Mode
Press & hold for 3+ seconds

This mode is for immediately threatening situations when you want to set off a loud alarm and send distress messages to your emergency contacts.

SilentROAR™
Press 3 times in a row

This mode is for discreet situations when you feel uncomfortable or sense danger. Your emergency contacts will receive distress messages BUT no alarm will go off.

Practice these modes at least once a month while wearing Athena

Wear it confidently
Attach it to your clothing, bag, pocket, or wear it as a pendant. Find a location that feels natural to you. We recommend ensuring Athena is securely fastened. Also included is a pouch where you can store your Athena when not in use.

 

You know your Athena is successfully paired when you open the app, tap the Athena icon,  and see “Athena is connected” next to the Bluetooth icon.

We want to allow as many people as possible to use the resources in the ROAR app, so is currently free to download with no associated monthly fees. However, text message and data rates from your wireless provider may apply based on your wireless service plan.

Saved Status Messages are messages that you can preset so when you update your status you won’t need to type out the same message every time. Run every day? Add a saved status that says “Heading out for my daily run! Check in with me in an hour if I’m still sharing my status!”

To add a Saved Status, open the ROAR app and go to: Settings → Saved Status Messages → press the + in bottom right of page → type in the status you would like to save.

And voilà – it’s saved! To edit a message, simply click on it in the Saved Status Messages screen. To delete, swipe left over the message and press Delete.

First, make sure the Bluetooth on your phone is turned on. Next, open the app, click the Athena icon in the top right corner, and wait for your Athena to pair. If nothing happens, try closing the app, connecting your Athena to charge, and then follow pairing steps again.

Nope! We specifically designed the app so that friends won’t need to download the app in order to see your status and GPS location. They’ll simply receive a text with a link that they can open on their smartphone.

When you invite someone to be your friend in the ROAR app, they will receive a text message with a link to accept the invite. They will need to verify their name, email, and number in addition to typing in a 6-digit code that will be sent to them via text. We suggest letting them know you’ll be inviting them so they know what to expect.

Upon opening the app, click the hamburger icon (3 horizontal lines) in the upper left hand corner and then tap “Friends.” Here, you can tap “Invite Friends” to add people from your contact list. When you tap “Invite” next to a contact’s name, you will be prompted to send a pre-drafted invite text message to them that will ask them to approve or decline the invite.

The only people that can see your status and GPS location are those that you shared it with. Any friends who you didn’t invite, who declined participation, or who you disabled in the app will not receive updates on your status. Go to the Friends page in the app to see who is currently able to see your status when you update it.

If you’re Athena isn’t pairing with your App, try the below steps:

  • Make sure Bluetooth is turned on
  • Open the app, click the Athena icon, and wait 30 seconds
  • If nothing happens, try plugging your Athena in to charge and try to pair it again

After conducting numerous focus groups and mock attacks within self-defense classes led by trained instructors, we designed Athena with distinctive raised texture to guide your finger to the recessed button in the middle of the device.

In order for Athena to work properly, the app needs to track your location. If location isn’t tracked, then your contacts will have no way of knowing where you are and how to get you help if needed. Check your smartphone settings to make sure location tracking for the ROAR app is enabled on your phone.

We designed the app to be as efficient as possible to avoid unnecessary battery drainage. However, having an active status for extended periods of time may cause the battery to drain more quickly than normal since your location will constantly be being pulled.

If you’re walking home from the bar and only want a couple other fellow night owls to watch over you (no need to wake mom or dad!) you can simply temporarily disable any contact you don’t want to be notified. Open up the “Friends” page from your navigation, swipe left over the person you don’t want notified, and then tap “Disable.” But, don’t forget to enable them again when you get home!

We recommend adding 3-5 emergency contacts (Friends) who live nearby, have similar schedules as you, etc. to help ensure that your alert messages are received and action is taken by your contacts to get help when you need it most.
